My Seasonal Decorating Timeline

Hey y’all!

I’ve had a few people ask how and when I choose to decorate, and I’m going to give my “schedule” for decorating in our home. And remember, decorate when YOU feel like it.

My birthday is in mid November and I always swore I would NEVER decorate for Christmas until Thanksgiving was done. Well, I changed my mind last year! It was our first Christmas in our new home and with little children, I could not WAIT to decorate. We love going through antique Christmas decor, turning on holiday music, and decorating several rooms for the season. I want this to be a fun time and something that the kids always remember and cherish!

My decorating timeline:

January & February – Winter Greens – remove anything that is “flocked”. White items.

March-April – Spring – Easter – think spring greenery – lighter colors

May-July– Americana

August-October – Fall – Halloween / Thanksgiving

November-December – Christmas – last week of December I do a tiny amount for New Years.

I have used this schedule over the last year and it has helped me feel organized (my type A personality shining through) and I don’t feel “rushed” and able to actually enjoy the season I’m in. I’m simply not decorating and pulling bins of decor down, to only have it up and packed away in another three weeks.

Another helpful hint when it comes to decor and holidays, before you start buying a ton of new items take inventory of what you have! Trust me, I love all the pretty shiny things, but I don’t need 25 of them! Make sure if you do buy before the next season, that you can return it if you don’t need it. I also enjoy making mood boards on Pinterest to gather my ideas and inspiration for each holiday. This helps me to narrow down what I’m doing with certain areas of my home. And I have somewhat of an idea of the colors I’m using and theme I’m going with.

I hope this will help you when deciding to pull seasonal items out and remember – do what brings you joy! And what makes your life easier. If you choose to wait and it’s your tradition to decorate the day after Thanksgiving, go for it. There’s really no right way and I’m happy to share what I’ve done. Happy Decorating Season!
